All the money raised in this auction will go to the Norwegian Diabetes Association (Diabetesforbundet), working for a better life for those of us with diabetes, and a future free from the disease.

From Kjell Arild’s blog:

Diabetes is an «invisible» disease and those of us with diabetes can seem to function like all other people. But as with most such invisible, chronic conditions, we face many daily challenges.

For those who don’t know me: I have type 1 diabetes, and have had it almost 38 years. But it took me a long time to be open about it. I was always the one who could fix everything and who took diabetes in his stride. But that’s not how it was. Here’s my story:

Last summer I hit a wall, mentally. I was struggling to combine managing my diabetes with a tough job and the need for family life. Something had to give.

I can’t get rid of my diabetes and I won’t give up my family. So the job had to go.

It was incredibly hard, but that’s the way it went. I decided to turn everything around and start to be very open about everything.

One thing followed another and soon I had a Facebook page with 4000 followers, I was featured on TV2, and that’s when I decided to walk the length of Norway.

It’s at this point Norway Chess, the Norwegian chess association, decided to get involved and support the work I had started.

To quote Benedicte Westre Skog, project manager from Norway Chess:

«We thinks it’s great to be able to support the brilliant work Kjell Arild does spreading information about diabetes. Our contribution is to give Kjell Arild an exclusive wooden chessboard signed by the players who took part in the Altibox Norway Chess 2018 tournament. This chessboard is certain to increase in value over time, with its 10 historic signatures from among others world champion Magnus Carlsen, as well as Vishy Anand, Sergey Karjakin and Fabiano Caruana.

This chessboard looks great mounted on the wall or as a feature in your living room or office. So join the bidding and support a good cause. Good luck!»

Thank you to Norway Chess for giving me the chance to give something back to Diabetesforbundet. The organisation does a great job informing about diabetes and campaigning for better access to treatment and technology for people with diabetes. It is unfortunately a fact that today, Norway is one of the slowest countries in the world to give people access to the latest technology for managing type 1 diabetes.
